to a rare sunday session. here's abc's jonathan karl with more. >> reporter: president obama cut short his hawaiian vacation, rushing back to washington where storm clouds, real storm clouds are gathering over the capitol. instead of deal making, it's name calling. the top democrat in the senate, accusing the republican speaker of the house of running a dictatorship. they say they haven't given up, but it sounds that way. >> i don't know time wise how it can happen now. >> here we are, once again, at the end of the year, staring at a crisis we should have dealt with literally months ago. >> reporter: without an agreement soon, nearly everybody takes a hit. a schoolteacher with two kids and a salary of $43,000, for example, will face a tax hike of more than $3,000. members of congress helped get us in this mess and they'll pay, too. with incomes of $174,000, they'll pay some $7,500 more in taxes. and it's not just taxes. on january 1, unemployment benefits expire for some 2 million people. you can expect one last effort, including a meeting at the white house with congressional leaders to t
is interested in getting this deal? >> as dana pointed out, lots of house republicans would rather vote on something after the 1st than before. i haven't seen any indication from obama or the people around him that they are okay with going over the cliff. they really do seem to want to do something before the deadline. they seem desperate to do that. plenty of liberals say, go over the cliff. big cuts in the pentagon and big tax hikes. the white house, from all indications that i've seen, they don't want that to happen. they are scared of what could happen to the markets. >> why aren't they dalg dealing with boehner? dana, be go ahead. jumpb in here. >> i think they won their negotiating power once boehner last week failed. as dana pushed out, the only thing that can get boehner is to do something. >> reporter: i think that you're right when i said that democrats don't think that the president will have much political damage. that does seem to be coming more from democrats here in congress than in the white house. democrats here in congress feel that it's a win-win for them politically.
a lack of courage to deal with these issues. >> reporter: the uncertainty has started to affect the markets, and economists warn going over the cliff will impact a lot of americans quickly. now president obama has said that he is confident that his plan could make it through both chambers. but of course in the house, that will be a bigger challenge where he would need to get a substantial number of republicans to vote for it. the house and senate are expected to be back in session tomorrow. erica? >> all right. thanks. >>> so what exactly does going over the cliff mean for your wallet? jackie deangelis is here to break it down. good morning. >> good morning to you. >> as we heard, the impact could kick in quickly. what happened on tuesday -- what happens on tuesday if there's no deal? >> the fiscal cliff is basically a series of an expiration of tax cuts as well as some new taxes combined with spending cuts that if we don't reach by the end of the year, we're going to go over, okay? there's a few main points that are really important to look at. the ones that are going to impact
